Hip Hop Songz….

Friday, November 18th, 2011

I’ve got a lot of love for my recent mashups on Mixcloud, but the daddies of the craft inspired me to do this mix.

New York AV8 records have been making cut & paste party tracks for over 20 years & they’ve been as much a part of Stump Juice as Booby Bird & The Brand New Heavies.

It’s a tribute to their craft & the shops I bought the stuff from.

Can You Guess?

Another upload Another mix.

The second of my mashups done using very basic equipment. This is essentially the ‘first pass’. The final version I remember got props when I first pulled it off, and I’ll probably put it up. Hoever, I think this is just as good.

Style Wars: The Anniversary

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Those of a certain age into hip hop will remember the seminal documentary ‘Style Wars’.

Whilst its primary focus was on the world of Grafitti/ Spray can artists or ‘writers’, it also featured some segment on the b-boys. Those of us hungry for more of the newly-emerging urban subculture seized it, watched it again & again, digesting every frame & factiod. despite having been shot on a budget smaller than a gnat’s hiccup, it is in my opinion, an important part of hip hop history as well as an incredible piece of social documentation.

It’s also one of the few attempts to directly observe, rather than simply cash in on hip hop or youth culture. It’s not perfect & some may question its objectivity but considering the social & political climate in which it was made, it’s incredible it got made at all.

Pitchfork media have done an article about how it came to be made, going back to the artists, film makers, in advance of its 25th anniversary.

You can find the article here.

You can also go to the Style Wars website & see the outtakes.

Here’s an example, with Henry Chalfont discussing the film & the current restoration project:

Anyone who is into hip hop most likely owes a lot to this important piece of film-making. Apparently they need donations to help restore over 30 hours of footage. If you think you can help, donate, if not, just check the website & show them some support.

Things I Remember from Stump Juice #1

Used this a lot in my sets.

Not AGAIN…………………………………..???

Friday, November 4th, 2011

My PC’s died. AGAIN. This time, it may be terminal.

Was doing some housekeeping ahead of a visit from one of my brothers & left the machine to its own devices (ahem), checking for viruses, malware & the like. I Then return to find the thing appears to have tried to restart, but returned a BOOT FAILURE.

Checking the BIOS shows it’s not registering my system drive, but can find my slave ¬†disk.

After a rather ‘hectic’ day at work, I’ll now be cursing & frantically trying to check the innards of this damn thing as well as possibly replacing the hard drive.

I DO have a drive image, but it’s several months old. That said, it’s better than nothing – ironically I HAD planned on performing said task todat.

Karma
