Summertiiiiiiiiime……….. (hopefully…..)……….

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

It’s been a while since I last posted anything – no blog entries, no mixes: I’ve only recently started getting back to answering stuff on Twitter!

Anyways, things have been a bit hectic (as  usual), but I managed to get to a couple of things:

  • The screening of Ice-T’s directorial debut: ‘Something From Nothing: the Art of Rap’
  • Wynton Marsalis & his band playing at Birmingham Symphony Hall.
  • I got the new case for my PC build (finally!)

The sun’s FINALLY put in an appearance, after all the horrendous rain, plus the general greyness we’ve had.

I’ll probably get around to discussing these in greater detail later, in the meantime, he’s a few things I’ve been listening to on Mixcloud:

Easter – Needed A Break…………

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Wow, what a difference a rest makes!
It’s been a depressing, frustrating time of late – work’s been hard, I’ve still not been able to fix my PC (which is in bits in my loft), so I’ve not been able to work on any tracks, or transfer any mixes digitally. Bummer.
On the (hugely) positive side, my youngest neice, her mother & grandma came to visit. This little force of nature tore through the house & bossed me around for a week – I wouldn’t change it for the world!
I have listened to some mixes on Mixcloud & here are some of them:

(UpdateOOPS!! forgot to actually put the damn things up – here you go, with a couple of more recent offerings..)

In the meantime, if any PC company, Focusrite or Ableton want to sponsor me (well send me free stuff), drop me a line…………………………….

Mo Wax, Mo’ Problems…………..

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Several weeks ago, I get a message from fellow ‘Caster Riccochet:

The industrious Miss Phi & iDI07S4VAN7 have put together mixes as (mini) tributes to achingly hip 90’s label, Mo Wax & do I want in on this project?

For various reasons (long-winded, boring), this message languishes unseen & unloved, gathering dust in my inbox. Repeated prodding (eventually) spurs me into action, well as much one can with 1 functioning deck a wheezy PC plus what I can onlt ‘politely’ describe as a ‘recalcitrant’ OEM version of Traktor LE.

As usual, I have to do things the hard way……………..

Which is precisely what I’ve been doing. I’ve been going through my record collection for stuff from Mr Lavelle’s label & digitizing it.

As with similar projects, digging back through my collection is quite an experience

Is it a measure of the quality or a desparate attempt to hold onto my dim & distant (mispelt) youth & vague optimism that I can still listen to these tracks? Or could it be that I simply bought wisely?

Looks like I’ll be using Audacity, particularly as follows:

  • Part of the mix  will be cut & paste job
  • Short, pre-mixed sections (recorded offline) will be dropped back in
  • May play around with effects/plug-ins

‘Why don’t you just get a new deck & stop faffing?’ I hear you ask.

Well, in part because:

  • I’m married (HAPPILY, I would like to add)
  • Life finds a whole new set of ways of emptying your pockets at this age
  • Since when did I ever end up going for the easy option?

This is about to get interesting……………………………

And It’s Goodbye from Phi………

Friday, July 8th, 2011

It’s a sad day – the very talented Miss Phi 1.61803399 is taking time out due to her hectic schedule.

The Girl From Antwerp has been an old Mixcloud buddy, with advice encouragement & eclectic tastes. Her mixes are always worth waiting for, surprising every time.

In the meantime, she’s signed off with a touch of class, before returning back to the veterinary world:

Not bad for a ginger bird………………..

My Mixcloud Buddies, Pt 1

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Since joining the Mixcloud community, I’ve not only uploaded my stuff to the wider world, but I’ve found a small but decidedly mint group of buddies who’ve seen fit to follow my work & I check out their stuff too.

They have very different styles but are united in putting together quality, genre-spanning (or defying) podcasts, not just a succession of bangin’ tunes.

TK Kid (Spain)

Our Man in Barca

Heard some of his mixes when I first heard of Mixcloud but before I signed up. He’s got a penchant for Jazz Soul & funk, but isn’t limited to or by these genres. Regularly working in Europe, he’s also put out stuff for Laidback Radio & check his website where you can download some storming selections

He also welcomed me on the ‘Cloud’ once I’d signed. A really decent chap.

The Girl From Antwerp

In some circles, mention the words ‘ginger’ & ‘Belgian’ in the same sentence amounts to ammunition for 15 minutes of (lame) jokes (Not me – I at least try to be creative, then aim my invective to as wide a group as possible – don’t want people thinking I’ve got favourites).

However, our ‘Gal from Antwerp’ has got quite the following for her sets. Ranging from Jazz, to gypsy music through to head-crunching DnB.  She also exemplifies the concept that

  • A  DJ can put together an astounding set purely on tune selection, as opposed to super-tight mixing
  • Not every DJ in Belgiun/Netherlands is dead set on frying your brains with ear-bleeding trance music

Phi 1.61803399, by the way is a number known as ‘The Golden Ratio’ (look it up on Google).

That’s it for now, I’ll get to some of the others later….
